Wolverines Lose the Opener

For the second straight year the Wolverines lose their home opener to the Elmwood Giants.

This was a tough lose for the Wolverines, as they were dominated in all three phases of the game by the Giants. The Giants didn't waste anytime getting on the scoreboard, as they returned the opening kickoff all the way to the Wolverine's 10 yard line. Three plays later they were able to punch it in for the TD.

The Giants exploded for 24 points in the 2nd quarter. Scoring on 2 passing TDs, a blocked punt, which they were able to scoop and score for a TD, and a FG.

The Wolverines had some terrific performances. Grade 11 receiver and defensive back Tanner Dola had a solid game with 2 catches for 30 yards, and an interception on defence, and 2 punt returns for 20 yards.

Grade 12 starter and team captain Duane Penner lead the defence with 7 tackles. He was a rock at safety coming up and making tackles all game. In the first quarter Duane had a big hit causing a fumble which the Wolverines jumped on. Have a look:

On offence Kodah looked good starting his first game at QB. This season will be a great learning experience for the grade 10 quarterback. He showed good presence in the pocket and threw some nice balls.

The season doesn't get any easier for the Wolverines, as they head to Steinbach to face the 1-0 Sabres on Thursday. The Sabres looked good in their opening game, defeating the Kodiaks 42-1.

Here are some video highlights of the Wolverines 39-0 lose to the Elmwood Giants:

Be sure to come cheer on your Wolverines this Thursday.

Let's go Wolverines!

Wolverine Season Comes to a Close

The WHSFL has 38 teams in it. All but 5 will end their season with a loss. Losing sucks and it is always a tough way to end a season. The Wolverines need to keep their heads up and be proud of their season, and their effort in their last game of the season.

It was a hard fought game that was close right to the end. They were facing the best team in their division; the 6-1 Kodiaks. The Kodiaks are a well coached team that has the division's number 1 offence lead by the division's number 1 QB. The Wolverines were able to score the first TD of the game, with a wonderful 6 play drive that featured some great running by Jonas Mulatu and a nice catch by Simon Sepke. The drive was caped off with a 2 yard dive play by Mulatu.
The Kodiaks were able to answer back with a  TD pass from the Wolverine's 5 yard line. It was their only offensive score of the game. The pass came at the heels of huge 38 yard pass and run play. The biggest play the Wolverine defence allowed in the game. At halftime the score was tight; 9-6 for the Kodiaks.
In the second half the Wolverines gave up a safety when a beautiful punt by the Kodiaks sailed over Fabian's head. He chased it all the way back to his endzone. It appeared he was able to run it out to the one yard line, but was then driven back into his endzone for the safety. The Kodiaks returned the ensuing kickoff for a TD. Making the score 21-6. The Wolverines were able to score one more TD when Taylor Ward made a great throw to Fabian Jacobson that put the ball on the 1 yard line. Ward was able to punch it in for the TD on the next play. That was as close as the Wolverines would get. Making the final score 21-12.

Below are some nice catches by the Wolverine offence:

A nice grab by Sepke, that sets up the Wolverines first TD:

Wolverines big defensive plays:

The Wolverines fail to get a Vidruk playoff win for the 4th time. However, they matched their best win total in Vidruk with 4. It was a really good coachable group that bonded quite well. Now it is time to work hard in the offseason and get better and get ready for next year.

Let's go Wolverines.

Wolverines Finish Regular Season 4-3

The Wolverines lost a tough game Thursday night to St.Paul's 37-10. They finish the regular season with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses, tying the franchise record for wins in a season in the Vidruk Division(AA). Way to go boys.

Here is how they got to 4 wins and 3 losses

The game was close at halftime, the Wolverines trailed 14-10. The second half was dominated by St.Paul's, scoring 13 unanswered points.

Jonas Mulatu had a great interception in the Wolverine end zone. It looked like he was going to take it all the way back, but unfortunately was unable to beat the last man back. Have a look below:

Below are three highlights from the game. The first clip features Sepke making a nice pic early in the game. The second clip is of Mages, and Sepke making a perfect compression tackle on the St.Paul's RB. Unfortunately, because of the camera angle it is really hard to see Sepke. The third and final clip is of Fabian Jacobson recording his first career sack. He came hot on a "Hammer Blitz."

Next up for the Wolverines is the "second season," the playoffs. As of Friday night it looks like the Wolverines will finish in 6th place, and will play either Elmwood, Steinbach, or River East in the first round.

Great regular season Wolverines, now let's get ready for the playoffs.
